working toward being thankful

Ryan and I were sitting next to each other on my tiny couch in my office staring at the book shelf and wondering about what would happen this Thursday when we opened our church doors to what was supposed to be a small group of people from our Adopt-A-Block friendships. Crista, our Adopt-A-Block leader, called to let us know last week that it was not going to be anything close to a small group of people. She was worried about the food. "We would need lots of food," she moaned. Sunday morning even more people told us they were planning on coming. What to do? We prayed. God showed up because I think He loves it when we are way over our heads and have to totally trust in Him. Crista let us know later on Sunday that we have more than enough food and then she apologized for getting so worried.
Once the closest friends of Jesus were in a place with thousands of people who were really hungry and way far away from any stores. They studied all those hungry faces and went to Jesus with a solution; "Jesus, tell them to go away." Jesus had a great retort; "You feed them." I can imagine the look on their faces because I have had that look more than once when Jesus stretched my faith like a rubber band. They grab a boys lunch and suggest that it was all they had and it was over the top, hopelessly not enough. Jesus showed them what trusting in Him can do. the 5,000 plus were fed, and lots was left over.
How about we do stuff that requires God to show up--as our faces hold expressions of shock and awe when he does? Amen!
